Ofsted praise for ‘family atmosphere’ and high expectations in Wilton Primary Academy!

Wilton Primary Academy has been celebrated by Ofsted inspectors for a “family atmosphere” and for the ways in which academy staff ensure every child feels happy and safe.

The small village academy in Lazenby was inspected Ofsted on 10 November 2022. The academy is part of Tees Valley Education multi-academy Trust which consists of five academies in Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland.

Staff at the academy were praised for their high expectations of children and for delivering a curriculum that “enables pupils to achieve well”.

The report also reads, “Staff successfully create opportunities for widening pupils’ horizons. This enhances pupils’ understanding of future educational and career pathways. Pupils are proud of their achievements in music and choir.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impacts on Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC).

Research suggests that the pandemic impacted pre-school children in a number of ways, including social, emotional and behavioural development and mental health, physical development and school readiness.

However, inspectors found that “children in Nursery and Reception learn the routines of school quickly. They listen attentively and respond well to staff and their peers”. Leaders were also praised because they have been responsive to the needs of children and “established secure planning for the early years and for key stages 1 and 2.”

Alison Hill, Executive Headteacher at Wilton Primary Academy and Dormanstown Primary Academy, said, “As a team across both academies, we are delighted that inspectors recognised the hard work of colleagues and were able to see the family atmosphere that makes Wilton Primary Academy distinct”.

Alison added, “our children love attending Wilton Primary and colleagues have excellent relationships with the families that make up our academy and the community. The last few years have been incredibly difficult for many families and we will believe it is our role to support, encourage and champion our children and families at every opportunity”.

The academy received further acclamation for its strong links with Dormanstown Primary Academy in Redcar. Inspectors noted that “links with another local school in the trust have expanded pupils’ experiences. This helps pupils to meet other pupils beyond this school.”

Katrina Morley, CEO of Tees Valley Education Trust, said, “We are delighted with the achievements of our colleagues and children at Wilton Primary Academy. At a time when families and communities continue to struggle, it is important for us to ensure that our children get the very best of opportunities. This is a tenet of our Trust and we express our thanks to the families, organisations and individuals that support the work of our academies across the region”.

The Power of Women ambassador programme

Tees Valley Education is proudly partnered with the Power of women who provide the young women of the Tees Valley with the role models, inspiration, resources and information to take control over the choices they make. Recently, Tees Valley Educations Pennyman Primary Academy and Brambles Primary Academy had a session with the Power of Women team and appointed new ambassadors! The children love the programme with one Brambles pupil saying, “I really enjoyed taking part in trying to change the world”. The POW ambassador programme works with schools across tees valley to lit aspirations and encourage equal opportunities. Boys are encouraged to join too, promoting the idea that change cannot be made and perceptions of women and gender norms rectified unless we teach them the meaning of equality. The programme consists of a series of activities and workshops and links schools with a sponsor business who act as the school’s partner. They provide support during the programme and offer opportunities such as work experience. The Power of Women focuses on enhancing our ambassador’s confidence, their ambitions and changing gender stereotypes. We are so pleased to be able to offer this programme to our children and create a better world for the future generation.

Teesport Explorers – PD Ports

Our partner, PD Ports, welcomed 250 primary school children to their career event last week, many being from Tees Valley Education. Year 5 children from Dormanstown, Wilton, Brambles and Pennyman spent an afternoon touring the sight, talking to staff and taking part in interactive activities.

Kirsten Donkin, Head of PR, Marketing & Communications at PD Ports, explained why it is so important for businesses to play an active role in promoting their industries.

“At PD Ports, we have always been passionate about inspiring the next generation whether that be through our award-winning apprenticeship programmes or via our co-founded charity, the High Tide Foundation.

“Recently, we have been focussing our efforts on introducing the world of maritime to children as early in their education as possible as we know that has a greater impact and greater change of positively influencing their perceptions when making career choices.

“As Maritime UK’s Business of the Year, we have been delighted to spend Maritime UK week actively promoting opportunities at PD Ports and would encourage any business who can to open their doors and do all that they can to inspire future generations.”

Middlesbrough Mayor ,Andy Preston, comes to Discovery!

Andy Preston spent a day at our brand new Discovery Special Academy building. He got a tour of the new facilities, spent time with the children and got to know the amazing staff. Discovery is the first free school for children with special needs to be opened in Middlesbrough. We hope that the work we do at Discovery inspires change and is only the beginning of doors opening and opportunities arising for SEN children in Middlesbrough.

SEND and Inclusion is a priority across all Tees Valley Education, and having a academy and specialised building dedicated to this was something hat has been in the works for a long time This was a 7 year long project, with endless research to ensure that we provide state of the art care , education and facilities. Now that it is finally up an running, filled with all of our children and staff, we love nothing more than to show everyone what we have to offer and the life changing impact it has on children with special and complex needs. Take a look at what Andy Preston had to say over on his Twitter:

Andy got stuck in, playing with the children in their new, fully secure courtyard with a range of equipment for the children too use to let off some steam whilst simultaneously developing fine motor skills. He also got a first hand look at how therapy dogs can be a great therapy option for some children – just one of the therapy options on offer at Discovery!

Welcome to Discovery!

Last week was the official moving day for Discovery Special Academy. Discovery is the first free special school for children aged 2-11 with complex learning and physical needs in Middlesbrough. SEND and Inclusion is proudly one of Tess Valley Educations specialisms. We hope to provide targeted interventions which are made available to those children who need them, at the earliest opportunity. This project has been in the works for 7 long years. For us, SEND education is more than just a ‘box to be checked’. TVED SEND has grown slowly and thoughtfully to become a family of academies that work together to blend the best educational and therapeutic practices there are to offer. The Discovery Special Academy is fully equipped with the best SEND education teaching staff, facilities, therapies, and resources on offer.

Discovery Special Academy and all of its staff and children have been in temporary accommodation over at our Brambles Academy sight since 2018. Move-in day arrived and was filled with both excitement and emotion. Staff worked incredibly hard all week to prepare the new building for the children’s return. Stacks of boxes filled with books, toys, and learning materials lined the hallways but with a lot of hard work, enthusiasm, and teamwork, the job got done. Tees Valley Education would like to thank all Discovery staff and hope it was all worth it.

In other exciting news, the opening of the Discovery Special Academy also marks the beginning of Tees Valley Education first ever secondary education division. We welcome our first group of year 7s and over the upcoming years look forward to rowing the secondary division further. Our work is never done and we will continue to work on our SEND education division to provide every child with the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Middlesbrough Mayor, Andy Preston, came to visit not so long ago. Click here to check out what he had to say!
