The Power of Women Campaign
Tees Valley Education are proud to support the launch of ‘The Power of Women’ campaign, a movement to lift the aspirations of young women across the Tess region, after one study names Middlesbrough as the worst area in the country for women to grow up.
The campaign is the vision of Professor Jane Turner OBE, pro vice-chancellor for enterprise and business engagement at Teesside University, who felt passionately that this should not be the case.
As CEO for Tees Valley Education, Katrina is supporting the campaign by sitting on the board as director, with Caroline Theobald CBE, Chris March, Dave Allen, Martin Walker and Rosalind Stuart, who runs Tees Valley Girls’ Network, an organisation that’s introduced 150 mentors to young women across the Teesside area.
To introduce the movement and raise awareness of the need to improve life chances in Middlesbrough from a young age, Pennyman Primary Academy’s Head of Academy Louise Stogdale and pupils Chloe and Molly took part in the online launch on the 23rd April. This event was attended by 110 people via Zoom, and will see much needed energy, time and investment.

It has supported SEND sufficiency across Middlesbrough and Redcar Local Authorities and continues to do so with the recent expansion into secondary provision.
It is the culmination of a number of years of work, dedication and commitment from Tees Valley Education staff, and our partner local authorities, along with other specialist providers, to secure much needed extra capacity for local children and families. Through outreach work in partnership with the LA and other providers, the Tees Valley SEND team and Discovery also support communities across the locality.
Dormanstown Primary Academy children are entitled to an excellent education; we ensure our children have the essential knowledge, learning dispositions and key values to embrace the opportunities and challenges they encounter to go out into the world and make a difference to their own lives and that of others. PD Ports
Celebrating the region’s best and brightest, the flagship NEPIC Awards support STEM education across the North East Chemical-Processing sector, with winners able to select a local school or initiative to receive funding towards a science related project.
PD Ports allocated £2,000 winnings to Tees Valley Education after realising their shared ambition to support primary school children with opportunities to investigate and experience a range of STEM and enterprise in the region. CEO, Katrina Morley, expressed her thanks on behalf of the Trust, when she added:

PD Ports is currently celebrating its 20th year of supporting young people through apprenticeships, which also coincides with the companies largest ever recruitment drive as it looks to recruit 50 new apprentices across its operations. International Women’s Day
On March 8th, we celebrated International women’s Day across the Trust by taking part in Teesside Universities International Women’s Day virtual event. Alternative materials were developed for an IWD careers project which focused on an exercise aimed at inspiring young girls and also encouraging them to think about their aspirations and ambitions. Girls in Year 6 worked through activity sheets along with examples and inspiring stories from inspirational women from our area.
Going forward, to give our girls a voice, the stories will be shared on Teesside Universities IWD webpage.
This year, Teesside University also developed an inspiration wall on their webpage. To link with they invited us to be part of developing an aspirations wall based on the girls work, using specific elements from their projects.

Creating a vision board
Thinking about what you want to achieve, collect some pictures to go on your vision board. These could be online or from old magazines. Select pictures that represent what you want to achieve. Be as creative as you want. Then, put them all together. The format of this is up to you – it could be a poster, it could be something you create on a computer. Add all of these to your board. The next step is to think of words that go with your goals. These are called affirmations and will help you picture what success will look and feel like. Here are a few example words: happy, successful, empowered, strong, healthy. Add the words to your vision board.
Storyboarding
Think about your story and the steps you will need to take to achieve it. For example, it could be travel, study, or work. It depends on what it is you want to achieve. Start with where you are now and where you will be when you achieve your goal. Don’t stop at one page if you want to do more, keep creating if you want to!
Creating a film
Unleash your inner director! Think about how you would turn your career plan into a film. Using your storyboard, think about how you would turn it into a movie. This could be the dialogue in each scene, what music would be used, costumes or even who would play your supporting roles. You can even think about if it would be an animation or live production. The sky’s the limit!

The first steps in reading:
Your child may be too young to start reading independently, but you can still point them in the right direction. Here are our top tips for encouraging a love of reading in our youngest pupils.
Reading aloud to your child
Talking about the words and pictures, and sharing ideas about the book.
Reading yourself
Children who see adults reading, and enjoying it, are much more likely to want to read themselves.
Surrounding your child with books
You don’t need hundreds of books at home, but go to the library or bookshop regularly to borrow books, spend time together, browse and make choices. In this way, reading becomes a habit.
Why do we read?
Reading is one of the most important skills your child will ever learn, and is a skill which will stay with them and benefit them throughout their lives. Here are 5 of the key reasons why we should all read for enjoyment:
Reading exercises our brain. Reading strengthens brains connections and builds NEW connections.
Reading improves concentration. Children have to sit still and quietly so that they can focus on the story when they are reading. If they read often, they will develop the skill to do this for longer.
Reading improves vocabulary and language skills. Children learn new words as they read. They absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features in their writing.
Reading develops a child’s imagination. While we are engaged in a story we are also imagining how a character is feeling. Young children then bring this knowledge into their everyday play.
Reading is fun. A book or an e-reader doesn’t take up much space and is light to carry, so you can take it anywhere so you can never be bored if you have a book in your bag.

Middlesbrough & Teesside Philanthropic Foundation donation
Middlesbrough & Teesside Philanthropic Foundation are fighting hard for disadvantaged children in Teesside during the third lockdown – in a bid to ensure they aren’t further disadvantaged in their learning due to lack of tech and/or connectivity.
Middlesbrough mayor Andy Preston – the founder of the charity – is backing a joint initiative between local firm PD Ports (Teesport) and the Philanthropic Foundation to raise funds to help provide technology support; such as laptops, iPads, Chrome Books and connectivity to local school communities to provide to their least privileged children.
With thousands of the town’s pupils again working from home following the government’s closure of schools, PD Ports – guardians of the River Tees – have made an initial £5,000 donation to the foundation.
Tees Valley Education are extremely grateful to have received a £2,000 donation from the Philanthropic Foundation which will buy 10 new iPads, making a huge difference to children and families in our community.
“Having Kieron’s school iPad at home has really supported his learning as it means he can access Showbie and his home learning easily, as well as other apps such as Spelling Shed. It also means he can contact his teachers for support through the Showbie app.”
Evie and Oliver’s Mam – “We previously had our own tablet but the battery is faulty and only lasts half an hour, but now they can get on and do all their learning.”
Isla said – “It’s great having an iPad to use because I am not in school every day. It means I can complete the work at home and I know how to use the iPad easily to help me.”
