Trust Intent

Long Term Rationale – We are ‘Growing to be Brilliant’

TVED Business, Enterprise and Cultural Curriculum (BEC) is a strand of our inclusive curriculum offer to all pupils that aims to meet both our trust, academy and our community context as a key anchor institution locally, regionally and nationally.

Intent

Today, children are growing up in a world that is rapidly changing in complexity, scale and challenge. It has never been more important to build a set of essential skills to succeed in life for our children: the ability to show creativity, to solve problems, to self-manage, to communicate effectively, and to work well with others. At the heart of our EBC Curriculum is an explicit emphasis on the development of pupils’ cultural capital through building knowledge, skills and capabilities for life-long learning and for operating successfully in society.

Our curriculum framework integrates a range of thinking skills and learning dispositions with collaborative and independent learning in order to deepen understanding, apply ideas, generate new possibilities and make decisions, as well as to plan, monitor and evaluate their progress. Personal and interpersonal skills and capabilities underpin success in all aspects of life, therefore creating opportunities for pupils to experiment with ideas, take initiative, learn from mistakes, work collaboratively and to interact effectively with others, enhances learning.

There is no ‘end point’ for these skills. Successful people are constantly redefining their own abilities as new experiences add to and change their understanding of what is most effective. We aim to provide opportunities for our children to build these skills woven through all areas of the primary curriculum.  Through career-related learning, we will build on children’s growing awareness of themselves and through opening up the world of work, we will provide opportunities to broaden horizons, tap into interests and skills and weave what they know into useful learning for now and later.

We will help children understand who they could become and help them develop a healthy sense of self in order to lay the foundations to find their own pathway to thrive and leave a positive footprint wherever they go in life as a local, national and global citizen.

Implementation

The BEC Curriculum provides a breadth of experiences and a range of opportunities for children to be involved in year on year, to enable progression in knowledge, skills and attitudes across the three strands of the curriculum. These experiences are mapped to provide an experiential offer as an integral part of the TVEd Curriculum for KS1 and KS2. Where appropriate, experiences and opportunities are aligned to real world situations, with a real purpose in the local community. This has the twofold effect of engaging effectively with the wider community whilst broadening children’s horizons and developing their sense of agency. Working in collaboration with lead businesses and institutions regionally and globally, contextualises the career-related learning, within the strands of the personal development and life skills, raises their aspirations and knowledge of the world of work, deepening the children’s understanding and development.
